A verse in the Qur’an refers to those who are “afraid because they are about to return to their Lord [i.e., to Allah in death or on the last day] (Surah 23:60). His favorite wife, Aisha, asked Muhammad to explain this verse: “O, apostle of God, is the one who is afraid of Allah the one who commits adultery, steals, drinks wine, thus he is afraid of punishment?” Muhammad gave her an answer that explains why Abu Bakr, her father, had no assurance of getting to Paradise: “No…he is the one who prays, fasts, and gives alms, thus he is afraid that Allah may not accept these things from him” (cited in Behind the Veil).

In contrast, Christ promised, “He that heareth [i.e., believes and acts upon] my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John:5:24). “I am the good shepherd…[that] giveth his life for the sheep…and I give unto them [my sheep] eternal life; and they shall never perish” (John:10:11, 28). John the Apostle declared to all Christians, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life…” (1 John:5:13). The Christian’s salvation is not dependent upon whether God would accept his good deeds (none of which are acceptable for salvation) but is assured by Christ’s payment in His death and resurrection of the full penalty for the sins of the world.
